Meditation

Sit

David’s voice for five minutes in the woodland — or a bell and a counted breath, until you are ready to come back.

Tips

How to sit without turning it into a project

Full meditation guide
  • The practice is the return

A wandering mind is not a failed sit. Noticing you have left, and coming back without a scolding, is the whole of it. Count the returns, not the minutes of blankness.

  • Sit smaller than your ambition

Five minutes you actually do will change a month. Forty minutes you dread will not. Put the timer on something kind, then stop when it rings — even if it feels too easy.

  • Start in the body

Feel the contact of sitting bones, the weight of the hands, the temperature of the air at the nostrils. Thought is weather. Sensation is ground. When in doubt, go lower in the body.

  • After plant medicine, do less

The urge to analyse a hapé or sananga sitting is strong. Give it a night. Walk. Drink water. Write one paragraph, not a thesis. Integration is mostly ordinary life, done a little more honestly.

  • Let Hampshire do some of the work

A lane, a tree line, a few minutes without headphones. Looking at something older than your to-do list is a meditation that does not need a cushion. David’s work lives close to this land — borrow it.

  • Soften the jaw

The face holds the week. Unclench the teeth. Let the tongue rest. Shoulders drop a centimetre. Half of “calm” is just ceasing to brace.

  • Feelings are not assignments

You do not have to solve a sadness that visits during a sit. Name it, locate it in the body, breathe around it. Insight, if it comes, comes later — usually while washing up.

  • The tone you use inside

Speak to yourself the way David holds a room: without hurry, without fixing, without shame. A harsh inner teacher will not produce a gentle life.
